They're STILL using XP?! They do know support is about to end for it right? And that the remaining security holes will remain unpatched? Sounds like that school's IT needs restructuring..
Anyway, I wouldn't use MSE. It's scanning engine is outdated and not as good as it used to be - MS really dropped the ball on that IMO.
You could install BitDefender Free.
That being said, however, since it's a school-owned machine, it may be against the TOS to install any of the free AV's (technically against MBAM's TOS for them to install it on individual student machines as well), unless it's ok'd for commercial or educational use in the license agreement.
