My DVDxcopy wont copy my DVDs on my DVD RW

I have a Gateway comp. and I just had a DVD RW drive installed including the software DVDXCopy. When i put a movie in, it starts to copy the disk then stops half way through and says that it is unable to read the disk, please insert proper disk in drive. I dont know what to do because i have DVDs that are scratched and I dont want to shell out the full amount again if i can just copy them. Any input would be much appreciated. Thank You

it could possibly (not too likely though) be when it switches between the two layers of the DVDR disk it temporarily pauses, and the software would see it as "stuffed up"
