I have a travel mouse that's small and has a take up reel for the cable. It moves the pointer ok and the scroll wheel works just fine. But the buttons are acting like the switch anti bounce is going out. I know I'll have to replace it and its sisters soon,
What makes them go out like that?

Physical wear most likely, mice and keyboards get hammered pretty regularly and over the months/years it takes its toll. Especially travel mice, which are usually cheap and opt for light-weight builds over solid construction in my experience.

^ Pretty much this. Switches are only rated for so many clicks, and if you use them often enough, they eventually go out.
