I'm assembling a coumputer out of garbage for my friend (actually for his father. He never used a computer, he just wants ability to play movies.)
The best I have - is Pentium 200mhz mmx (I know that sucks).
I have lot of old sdram memory , so I put 128+128+128=384mb
I have many 10 year old video cards. I tried couple of 1mb Cirrus logic, but they don't support overlay (necessary for video) - so I found some another 2mb pci video card, and added another 2mb to it's video banks from another card. I tried various clock settings for the processor, the fastest I could get - 249mhz ( I put 83 on system bus instead default 66mhz). Processor multiplier is locked, so mult. jumpers on bard had no effect.
I installed there Win2000.
I tried various video players (mplayer ,bsplayer, mpc, core).
In most cases It plays video fine -- except for those movies with large resolution.
For example, for mpeg1 352x288 it plays w/o frame drop, cpu usage is about 40%
For Mpeg4, around 640x272 it plays fine (mostly) cpu load is around 75-95%
Movies like 640x480 It can't handle, and video is played slower than audio.

Does anybody have any tips on how can i improve performace of ths old dude?
If not, what is a minum machine specs, that should flawlessly play mpeg-4 movies?
