hp cd writer plus - xp

i got an hp cd writer plus 9100 drive from my brother in law. i installed it and the computer recognized it at first. then i installed hp recordnow cd burning software. after i installed it the computer no longer recognized the drive. i checked hp support and it said to remove a couple files from the registry and/or remove the adaptec driver from windows media player 7.X. i have media player 9.0 so i don't know if it uses the same adaptec driver, but either way xp won't give me the option to remove it and removing the files from the registry didn't help a bit.
does anyone know what i might be able to do to get this thing working?

that's where i downloaded the software initially. it wasn't until after i downloaded it and installed it that i started having trouble. i saved a copy of the registry before i started messing with it.
