file restore

hey, i've heard of these programs that will find files on your hard drive from past pre-formats so that if your computer crashes and u had to reformat but could not back up data u can restore your files, could someone provide a link to one that works? and that is either free, or trial, all the ones i've ever tried i either couldnt restore anything or i couldnt find anything, thx in advance.

in free or trial, don't count on anything working.
i can't even recover data on a floppy disk without a $30.00 program.
