usually, detecting ide drives takes 1 or 2 seconds for me. recently, it started taking a long time (about 1min). is there something in the bios i can change to make it back to normal, or any other way to fix this?

is the problem is for only hard disk or it exists for all ide drives like cd drive etc?
If it is for harddisk its the problem with ur hard disk.
After booting thoroughly check harddisk for errors(perform scandisk) U can find bad sectors in the hdd
