Wireless Internet Connection Struggle

When I boot my computer up each time it is a struggle to get it connected to the internet. It is setup to connect automatically; however, it says it's unable to connect. I'm using a PCI card and it works fine, it recognizes the the wireless signal it's just a pain for several minutes each time while I try to troubleshoot clicking places I don't know what they even do.

The wireless router works fine. I use several other devices such as IPAD, Roku, and my phone all work flawlessly.

I think I just have the settings all wrong but have know idea what to do, Google has been no help since it wants me to go to Yahoo Answers. I don't want a yahoo answering my questions.

What model of wireless router are you using?
How far away is your computer from the router?

I suppose another obvious question is if your router is password protected.
