My friend is thinking of this for a new build. I am pretty sure the could do better for the same price. He is a gamer. I did a little looking around but can't find anything in the 560~ dollar range that looks any good. I am looking at builds on pc part picker and just googling other 560$ builds but they are all i3s or pentiums with motherboards that have only 2 ram slots.

His idea

I really don't want him to buy an fx 8350 or any am3 plus because they are all dinos at this point

I think that would be much better. I suggested to him to get something core i5 but he seemed to think the higher clocked fx was therefore better because of higher GHZ. I don't even know how to explain it to him

That's not a bad build, but if he got something with a Ryzen 3 he could probably fit an SSD in budget too then get a Ryzen 5 1600 later for 6 cores.

ryzen 3 is dual core right? I have a hard time convincing him of what is good and what isn't he thinks an amd fx 8 core 4ghz is better than all the latest i5s because more cores and more ghz. He might just add an SSD down the road once he gets more money I think

Then let him be stupid? If he thinks a 5 year old CPU that was **** then (with many many reviews to prove it) will beat out i5s that came out this year then he needs to maybe learn his lesson and waste his money. I have all but stopped overly trying to convince people on hardware purchases these days. I know it sounds harsh but when somebody drops 500 to a grand on parts without listening then realize later they were stupid it makes them learn. Ryzen 3 1200 is quad with no SMT. Ryzen 5 starts with 4 cores and 8 threads. The Ryzen 3 1200 is also aimed at being less than $150.

I mean, you could also point out the lack of features on the old *** AM3+ platform too. The ONLY board decent for that platform is the Asus 970 Aurora and all of it's features are through 3rd party controllers. The M.2 is also limited to PCI-E 2.0.
