If I buy a computer with a built in ATI card, and install my own nvidia in the pci express socet. Would I just deisable the ATI and let the Nvidia work? How would that process work? Like if I install the drivers for the Nvidia the ATI would still be kicking in, would I just disable it in BIO's? Could there be further complications?

The only ATI drivers you would want to uninstall would be the display drivers, not the chipset. Then, once you disable the onboard in the BIOS, you should be good to go.

ATI can be run on Nvidia chipsets (I am doing it), and Nvidia can be run on ATI chipsets. It's just the graphics drivers that conflict.
