Receive notifications -> BT 3.0, wifi or other?

Hi there,

im currently doing research to develop my own product. Since i lack most of the knowledge concerning notification-technology, i was hoping you guys (or girls!) could help me out.

I think its quite a simple set up. In the basic it needs to function like this:

When i push a button in my home, an smartphone or laptop app connected with the button at home needs to give a notification to the user, despite being not around the button (i.e. at work) and using another wifi or 3g/4g.

There are probably a couple of ways one might accomplish this. I would love to hear your technical knowledge/opinions about this!

Is this for a custom application you're developing?

BT would be out the door right away - that's for device->device communication within about 30 feet.

If this is for a custom software app...
You'll have to use the internet and a server running that captures web services so that it can relay the notifications to the other connected/associated device.

Or are you wanting an off-the-shelf solution?
