It'll start off in China but do you think it will die off there? Seems like the industry is pretty much locked down no?

Most networks - at least in the UK - are in the process of decommissioning their 2G networks in favour of 4G, and keeping 3G in existence for the purpose of circuit-switched fallback. I imagine the situation is similar across the world, and so I'd be surprised if any new device didn't have 3G regardless of cost.
