ipod dissconnects randomly and dosnt accept movies

my mum got her ipod yesterday and when she tried to put movies on ot she got an error msg saying: the ipod cannot be synced because a required folder is not available (or some thing like that) also when you try and put images on it it disconnects by itself. help would be cool
