I only need the system to output one value

Is it possible to get the height of a hockey puck with a microchip in it. An idea that I have is to put in a chip that would be able to output the puck's height at all times. Is it even possible with today's technology? What kind of device would be needed? Would a 3-axis accelerometer be close to what's needed?
