My friend got the cat5e cable (crossover?) cable to replace the standard cat5 cable (patch?). The cat5e says on the cable gigabit ethernet patch cable although when purchased it was advertised as crossover. The damn link between the 2 pcs still isn't working. One is running Marvel Yukon Gigabit ethernet on the mobo the other is running Davicom 9102/A fast ethernet adaptor pci. What am I doing wrong? The IP is different and subnet same.

Is it that gigabit ethernet is not compatible with fast ethernet?

Are you sure it's a crossover cable? Can you look at both ends of the cable and notice a different color pattern? nowadays, auto-sensing ethernet adapters are making life easier by allowing crossover and straight-through cables to be attached between two PCs but it may not be available on your PCs. Are you getting a link light on both ethernet adapters?
in short....gigabit and fast are virtually the same thing minus some speeds capability differences.

The cable reads XTR-602 YFC UTP CAT5e. PATCH ISO/IEC verified for gigabit ethernet..
