AMD Closes In to Command Half of Discrete Graphics Processor Market

ATI, graphics business unit of Advanced Micro Devices, has gained a substantial chunk of the standalone graphics processor market in the first quarter of 2010, according to analysts from Mercury Research. The achievement signifies success of ATI Radeon HD 5000- and 4000-series graphics processing units (GPUs).

Thanks to the latest graphics family and the lack of competing DirectX 11-compliant solutions, ATI Radeon HD 5000-series helped ATI to boost its desktop GPU market share to 42.1%, up 8.2% from the previous quarter, according to a reported published by ChannelWeb web-site. The ramp up of ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000- and the launch of the Mobility Radeon HD 5000-series chips early this year, AMD's graphics business unit also increased its market share to 49.7% by about 9% in Q1 2010.

Mercury Research estimates that AMD also gained 2.8% share in the overall graphics market, which includes both standalone GPUs and integrated graphics processors (IGPs), whereas the share of Nvidia Corp. dropped by 4.8%, which means that the company lost share to both ATI and Intel Corp.

It remains to be seen whether ATI will manage to hold its market share in the Q2 2010 after the arch-rival Nvidia Corp. released its long-awaited GeForce GTX 400-series graphics lineup based on GPUs with Fermi architecture.

It looks like the HD 4000 and HD 5000 series have really turned things around for AMDs sales as well as performance.
