Your router is an essential piece of kit for getting online but it is possible that you may not be getting the most from it. While almost all routers have some form of web interface that can be used to access settings such as port forwarding, traffic logging and more, few are intuitive to use and many have options hidden in places that are not immediately obvious. Router Commander is a free tool that can be used to take control of your router and boost performance

You will need to ensure that Telnet or SSH access is available on your router; this is not something that is supported by all models and you may need to check to see how to enable it. Once you have Router Commander up and running, it can be used in a number of ways. If your router places a limit on the number of connections that can be made to a particular server, or the number of maximum simultaneous connections, you may well have noticed that downloads can be slow. Router Commander enables you to increase this limit to help speed things up.

There are a number of built in profiles that can be loaded depending on the type of online activity you are to engage in. For example, you may want to ensure the best possible P2P performance, or avoid HTTP disconnections. If you do not want the hassle of forwarding ports every time you need to, this is something that Router Commander can help with, taking care of the port settings for you automatically.

Another key aspect of the program is the monitoring component which enables you to keep a close eye on how your connection is being used. This means that you are able to see which programs and services are using up bandwidth, but also to monitor for potential security issues. There is also a handy troubleshooting tool that can be used to overcome all manner of problems.

Verdict:
A great tool for more advanced users, helping you to get more from your router.
