Hello everyone,

I have a cd drive (actually a dvd drive from a dvd player). I opened it up, and am trying to get the drive to spin, and for the laser to turn on without a disc. It's been surprisingly difficult to find information on the mechanism that senses the disc inside - I would like to disable or get around it somehow. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I've read that it is dangerous to operate these drives without a cover because the laser beam can damage your eyes

I strongly advise not doing this as the laser CAN and WILL damage eye tissue if you get a student that looks at it from above. That aside, use a regular burned CD in a working DVD drive for a PC, and have it hooked upto the PC, just remove the lid, and take the magnetic clip out that secures the disk to the spindle and youll be good to go. This way the light is heavily scattered and students wont get blinded as easily. Still dangerous doing this.
