Will a 500W PSU be sufficient?

A friend of mine will be building a new rig soon. Here's his list.

Will something like a Thermaltake 500W power supply work for this setup?

according to the newegg wattage calculator- youd need at least 538= and youll want good amps on the 12v rails for the graphics- Always jump a little higher then what it says- 538 means it would BARELY do it- Id shoot for 600


All that assuming the newegg calculator is correct- I don't know enough myself to calculate each needed - expecially since the options are limited in neweggs choosing- i chose High end mobo, 10,000 rpm drive, etc etc- I chose GTS (even though its higher power use) since the GT isnt on the list yet.

post the thermaltake you're looking at purchasing, 500W will barely be enough but more importantly buy a decent one, with good 12V rails.

here's a 500W with 3 12V rails with 18,18,16 which is 52 total Amps which would be more than enough for your system

and for $20 less you get 2 12V with 18Amps each

EDIT: oh and tell your friend to get a Q6600, lot less and you can just overclock to Q6700 speeds.

I was under the impression that a good 520W PSU would handle this system, but that is obviously less than Kisskerven's 538W recommendation.

Can anyone else provide some more insight on this?

the ever recommended HX series will do, and with good reason, they're very good PSU's.

But if your worried about it, or want plenty of headroom, stick a 600W in. I wouldn't suggest getting a lower quality 500W and just hoping.

And as aether mentioned, the 6700 isn't worth the extra cash.

Get the corsair 520hx, replace the q6700 with a 6600 and the raptor with a new seagate .11 drive. This will save you a LOT of money and more than likely end up within 5% of the same speeds.

I would suggest for a non modular unit: PCP&C 610, and for a modular one, HX620.

Power supply calculators are stupid. You certainly do not need a min of 538 Watts for that build..

The corsair 550vx is also nonmodular and only about 80 bucks. 83% efficiency and a giant 12v rail, 48A i believe.
