-very new, 2.2 ghz, 1 gb ram, 160 gb
-perhaps a lot of processes running?
-VISTA
-past few days i've left it on for almost 72 hours
-had a MEMORY MANAGEMENT crash
-after giving the laptop rest it works better

Can anyone help find out what was/is going on or what the problem is and how to fix it?

Can we have the make an model? that would help figure out is there is simmiler problems with the same model. Also turn it off more laptops are not designed for prolonged use.

Maybe heat related since you left it on so long. Laptops are meant to turned off when not in use. You simply can't leave them turned on like your desktop. It's bad for the parts and can cause crashes like the one you had. If you want to check for a hardware problem I'd start with memtest 86+ and run a chkdsk. You should also defrag your hd. If it's fragmented you can get crashes and bsods that mention memory as a possible cause, too.
