I'm trying to fix my sister's computer. Windows 98 was preinstalled.
Can't get into safe mode, it stalls at Windows logo screen.
There is the 'device referenced in System.ini not found'. The devices listed are: dfs.vxd and vredir.vxd
I don't know what those drivers do.
I tried the step by step boot and it just restarts. I think the last thing it asked to load was ndis.vxd
Any suggestions?

Get a Win98 boot disk if you don't have one already, and boot up into DOS. At the A> prompt, type in C:[cr] You should then see a C>
Type in dir/p [cr]
This will bring up a directory of what's in the computer. See if there is a folder(directory) called "cabs". If there is, type in cd\cabs[cr]
Type in dir/p[cr]
look for a .exe file called "setup" If it's there, type setup[cr]
That will start the Win98 setup, and that should restore your installation of Windows.
If you don't have a "cabs" directory, you'll need a CD of Win 98 to restore it, although it may be possible to work a fix through DOS, I'm not able to get that detailed without seeing what the computer is displaying.
Hope you get it figured out. Best of luck.

Thanks, I'll try but I'm doubtful they're there. I have Win 98 preinstalled on mine too and I don't have them.
