My family hasn't lost a service member since WWII, thankfully. I lost a great-uncle in WWII and had quite a few others who served in both WWII and Korea. I had three uncles in Vietnam and they all made it back.
I have reflected back on those who have served today, especially on those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. While all here enjoy freedom, it has a different meaning here in the US. I would guess that's because we are still a fairly young nation and the memory of the lives lost to earn and keep our freedom is still fresh in our corporate memory.
Day is done, gone the sun
From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky
All is well, safely rest
God is near.
Fading light dims the sight
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright
From afar, drawing near
Falls the night.
Thanks and praise for our days
Neath the sun, neath the stars, neath the sky
As we go, this we know
God is near.
