Speakers in headphone jack?

Right now, I have a bad speaker cd player and I plug in speakers into the headphone jack. I hear static, and is this just me, or should I upgrade to a minisytem to fix my problem? I'm eying a sony and a panasonic.

get some headphones and plug them into the headphone jack. if you hear static through the headphones that means your sound card is probably damaged. if you do not hear static that means your speakers are damaged. replacing whichever is damaged will fix it. please let me know what you find out

no, it's not a computer. It's a el-cheapo CD player (tabletop)
