problems with video quality

i have a dvd which i copied into avi with the XVID codec and when i play it some of the objects on the screen break up into horizontal lines. This is localised around the moving objects and can become very annoying. does anyone have any ideas on this

Bitrate to low..........and/or, its related to the interlacing of the original movie.

i found a filter called "interlacing" on virtual dub and seemed to fix the problem
