Possible bad XBOX DVD drive?

I work at a video game store and I recently acquired two XBOXs, which were going to be thrown away because they didn't work. A co-worker told me one's DVD drive doesn't open, and the other just won't read discs. I figured I could take them for modding projects, but need some help troubleshooting the exact problem. I'm almost positive it's just bad DVD drives, though. I came here for a second opinion and some tips for solving my problem(s).

I saw a site that sold xbox drives for $30ish buy two replacements, then fix em' then sell em'
