When data is sent out from the virtual machine OS on say port 1234... Does the host computer know of this data thats being passed through the port? Also, would the receiver of the data know about the host OS or just the vm OS?

Hello,

Most of the time the VM will open the port on the Host machine. The reciever would not know if it was a host or VM.

Cheers,
Mak

Exactly, most VMs by default speak to the host on a set port range and only that particular range. All outside communication from the VM to the internet would be mirrored as if it was the host machine.
