Recommended Protection Programs

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
  • WinPatrol to monitor any changes that programs make to the registry.

If you do not have a firewall, here are 4 free ones available for personal use:

In todayÂ’s world you MUST have an Antivirus program. If you do not have one, here are 3 FREE ones available for personal use:

Thanks MicroBell,

I believe everything has been cleaned. I will take the additional precautions to keep my PC clean. However, I do have 2 questions for you or please re-direct to another section of the forum.

1. While deleting some files the Start Menu and Task Bar are no longer that nice looking blue. Its plain gray. Do you know how to restore the color?

2. When I went to the services.msc panel, I get the following message (I used to get it when I had NAV, I recently un-installed it). Message: "Your security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on the page. As a result, this page may not display properly." I went to Security settings are "Enabled" all ActiveX controls. But I still get the message. Do you know how to resolve this problem?

Again, thanks for you great support. If you can help with my 2 questions, let me know, or suggest somewhere I can follow up.

Thanks,

1. NowÂ… right click on your desktop>>> properties and and under the "themes" tad WindowsXP should be present again. Check the "Appearance" tab and WindowsXP Style should also be present. Select each..click apply..then ok.

2. Check your services and see if you have any Nav settings or services still running.

Yaayy! I was able to restore the Start Menu and Task Bar to the blue color. Thanks.

The only small issue is trying to get the security settings changed to allow ActiveX controls (I wanted to get 2006 Norton Antivirus). I tried looking in Services, but no sign of Norton AV settings or services still running. Any other possibilities?

Thanks,

I wanted to add a little info to my previous post:

The problem seems to have begun about 2 months when I was reading another message board and it suggested to reset the security settings in Internet Explorer to "prompt" when ActiveX controls are being used/downloaded. So I thought it would be a good thing. After doing so, the "Custom Level" option was no longer available for me to select, until just recently after cleaning up my computer. I tried resetting to default specs and also allowing all ActiveX downloads, but no luck.

What do you think?

Reset the whole browser settings. Do you have any other programs that monitor activeX? If so..disable them and see if that fixed the issue. I get the same message on the "Help" screen because it contains activeX links and I have them blocked.

Honestly...you should leave them blocked as thats an install point for malware. I would suggest asking your question in the Browser forum as they may have more info for you.

Well, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "Reset the whole browser settings". On Internet Explorer, I reset the Security and Privacy settings back to Default. I went back to Services and still got the pop-up message.

Anyway, thanks for all the help. You can close this thread and I will follow up a little more with my question in the Browser forum.

Thanks,
stardanz1
