This is often done through auction sites like eBay and other specialist fan sites.

Many of these transactions are against the terms and conditions of the games and must be carried out covertly.

I think it's about time that eBay and the software devs start cracking down on this sort of thing. Like it's against eBay's terms and conditions to sell OEM software by itself as it's breachs the terms and considitions of the software. So why should MMORPG accounts and items and currency be any different.

MMORPG idenity theift can easily be solved if the Devs made some channel open in order to report hacked account.
Like surely looking at some log files and identifing the fact that your account is suddenly getting logged on from a Russian (or some other country) IP Address, along with Password and Account Details getting changed, and then having a original user suddenly complain that they can no longer log in with their character should be more than enough to be able to prove some thing has gone wrong.
The only problems there is the following :-
* Legit users that log on regularely from different net cafes.
* The channels need to be put in place to allow commincation between end user and software developer.
