internet texting

Cant you just use an Instant Messanger like Windows Live Messenger? Most smart phones have IM capabilities now as well. Just need a service plan that can connect to the internet.

I know you can email texts to a verizon phone by typing phone number@vzwpix.com.

I'm sure other providers have similar ways.

Most ISP's allow you to text from your mobile account online from their website (e.g. if you have Verizon, you can go to Verizon's website and text another mobile number from there).

This is true, but one weird thing with Verizon (I do not know if this occurs with other companies) but for some reason every now and then a text or picture gets stuck in some fore of "mobile purgatory" and then will finally show up in your inbox days later. Random - but this drives me nuts.
