how to connect to WAN with laptop?

I want to get a network that directly connects to the LAN, and not to "my desktop" then the internet. access: local and internet, but I don't want it getting connection thru my desktop. it's using a wired connection btw. I don't know why it's not saying LAN connection like it used to. help? sorry if this sounds confusing, lol.

here's some screenies.

that is my modem.
it's a modem + router.
I am trying to get my laptop to not get the internet connection from my desktop. instead get it from it's own lan or something.
I know the easiest way is to do this with a router, but my modem has a built in router so it's kinda difficult.

edit: ~ I actually found out what I wanted is it to be connected to WAN mini port. how do I do this?

Remove any internet sharing setting on Lukes Desktop.

BTW, moving thread to the networking subforum.

sorry, but how do you do that?
I'm running on windows vista home premium

edit: I actually found out that the luke's desktop is high speed internet I think.
but it doesn't make sense because when I unplug my desktop's computer Ethernet jack the internet goes out.
