Every thread seems to recommend the 260 core 216, then OC to match the 280. Is there anything that would put the 280 over the OC'd 260? Can you OC the 280? If money wasn't the difference (hah, I wish) would the 280 be the better choice still?

Yes you can overclock a 280 and it will outperform a core 216. The reason the core 216 is so popular though is its bang for the buck. When you can overclock a $250 card for free and get the performance of a $400+ card its just hard to pass up.
