Crawler/Indexer thingies

Does anyone know the name of those guys that ran the experiments which crawl over the internet logging keywords and stuff like, looking for changes in the "internet atmosphere"?

I saw an interview with one of the original engineers and he said that this thing can fairly accurately predict big world events somehow. Obviously it could be an exaggeration, but i want to research it myself, but I don't even remember the name of the project!
