I have over 10 solid years of professional experience but a 5 year gap. I would like to know what would be the best certification to obtain that would give me credibility and allow me to appear competent and broaden my job search and . I realize that does not sound very good, but I am being honest, I will take an entry level position but I want to be confident. Allow me to explain.
I have always been able to apply myself and learn quickly; as a supervisor in auditing my past employer (Foxwoods Resort Casino) continued to grow. I pursued projects involving upgrade and implementations. For example, retail point of sale (STS), F&B (Micros), Credit Cards, Hotels and the finance modules w/ PeopleSoft and Oracle. I enjoyed the process from inception - training and decided to return to school and take classes towards a BS in MIS. This is when I had a few hiccups that caused a 5 year gap in employment. (My son was diagnosed with ALL- Leukemia when I originally intended to return) - All is well and I am ready to return to work with the same gusto and passion. I did finish my BS in MIS in 2011 and PMP this year.
Good news is I was afforded an opportunity to take 2 FREE certifications in my field through a re-employment program - I want to make the best of this as it may be awhile before I am able to "hit the books" when gainfully employed.
PS. I did do my internship in 2008 at the FDA, as an Information Technology Specialist, and also worked at a college for 6 months as a systems analyst.

I want to thank you in advance for taking the time in helping me as I prepare for the future.:silent:

Well you told us your background, but i didn't see anything about what you WANT to do. What are your interests. My only assumption is it's something in computers because you are on a computer forum and your BS in MIS with PMP.

With a BS you should have gotten your hands on a decent amount of technology - any of those peak your interest?

Ive always told people starting in IT to get their A+ - i know basic but it shows you know hardware. Next I would get a microsoft operating system certification, right now i would do Windows 7. CCNA would also be a good start but that's pretty advanced.

I am interested in the Systems Analyst type opportunities. I would like to transition into the healthcare industry. I am going for an in-person interview for an entry level position with a large health insurance company this coming Friday. Infrastructure Engineer Specialist - is the title, although I am a quick learner I do think this position would offer a good foundation, I want to compliment the work (hands-on) with the certification that will extend beyond one position. I was leaning toward the two you were discussing, A+ just to make sure I cover my basis and areas I have been a bit removed from, due to the situation. I do like the CCNA, I know the end results will benefit me both professionally and personally. I know it is also very involved, and perhaps getting my "feet wet" first might be helpful. Thank you for your response.
