Bose Speakers not working on my IMAC?!?

I currently have a set of Bose Companion 5 speakers hooked up to my IMAC and sometimes they work sometimes they dont...Im not sure what the issue is or if its user error but ill be listening to itunes or youtube and they will just stop putting any audio out without notice and wont turn back on again unless i reset the computer or the speakers...and that doesnt always work. Hopefully i dont have a short somewhere. Has anyone else had this problem?? Thanks!

When they stop working, are the speakers losing power?

Try hooking them up to your phone or iPod and see if you have the same problem?
This will determine if it is your computer or if it's the speakers

Thats the best way to start, narrow down where the problem is. If you just use your iMac built in speakers, do they ever cut out or it only happens with the Bose speakers?
