Thank apokalipse for this one!

http://xbench.com

You gotta have Jaguar or higher to use it, but it's pretty dang cool!

The weird thing is... Once you complete the test, you can compare your scores to other Mac's scores... I thought it'd be funny to look at my iBook G4 next to a 2.0 ghz Duallie G5...

My iBook BEAT the G5 in more than one category!

See for yourself!

Hmm...but you don't know his was configured...what the conditions of the test was. He might have had his computer running several high-CPU consumption tasks at the time of the test. He may have much more software installed. He may have Jaguar...perhaps there's only 512 RAM installed.

But otherwise, congratulations  :D

lol, true, but he had Panther 10.3.5 which is one up from me (10.3.4) and he had 2 gigs of RAM which is 720-some mb up from me (1280mb)

And the benchmarking software (at least for me) shuts down all other apps before continuing. :)

CPU Test: The G4 has a better Altivec than the G5, so thats why you have a better score there. But the G5's improved FP Unit makes short work of the older G4's.

Memory: The 1GHz bus and DDR400 (PC 3200) dual channel RAM speaks for itself on this one. Pretty much handed your G4 its ass on a plate in all but the allocate section (a fluke if you ask me, but I remember first testing the G5 when it had been introduced and seeing the same thing.)

The person with the G5 didnt run the graphics test (which he probably would have run.. the Geforce FX 5200 ultra is more powerful than your Radeon 9200 mobility) and you didnt run the disk test (which he also would have won: 7200RPM SATA drive can easily beat a 4200RPM PATA drive.)

So all in all, pretty good scores... but no G5.

[edit:]

I Ran xbench too, to see how I did:

Nice scores G5, my iBook, when completed all the tests, came up with a total of 109.86.

And you're right, there were reasons why my iBook out performed that G5, but it still is pretty cool to see how you stack up against other Macs :D

Want a good benchmark to test across different platforms? run setiathome and compare work unit times.Wont help with graphic handling abilities of a system, but it will give a very good idea of raw number crunching power.
