Actually the 3200 is 2.0 ghz as well, the only difference is it has 1024 cache rather than 512. The 3400 is the 2.2 ghz.

Sounds like the same thing that happened to me. It was a bad harddrive in my case. Whenever I had my CDROM and HDD hooked up together, it only recognized my CDROM. But when I unhooked the CDROM, sometimes it would recognize my HDD, but not all the time. I replaced the HDD and it fixed everything.
