cant start in safe mode if the machine isnt recognising the disk at all! Sounds like trouble. Try re-seating your IDE cable, also try a different one altogether. If both of those do nothing, try putting the disk in another PC (provided you have one) and see if it gets recognised. If...

Nah, USB is slack in comparison to IDE....but, USB 2.0 is pretty funky. The drive that you're thinking of buying supports 2.0, so check that you have 2.0 support on your mainboard aswell! If so, you'll be set.

are u saying u want an exact image of your old hard drive on your new one? If so, find yourself some ghosting software....norton ghost or the like. There are plenty of neat utils around for cloning/imaging and such.

You should go do some reading salve. Goto a good search engine and look up what you wanna know. There are already millions of how-to's out there that will teach you the basics in very plain english.
