"using the cd to boot is the same as booting without it...no effect at all" So, u can boot from cd.Try to boot from a linux live cd,like knoopix-linux or ubuntu-linux.these os automatically initialises all of the devices.If booting,then it will be best to format ur drive and reinstall XP

well,as for me I think connecting individual speakerswil do more good(This is just becoz i am using a sterio speaker and an earphone and i too am getting multichannel effect)

As u said i ran contrl panel - add hardware wizard.I got a list of devices including modem.But ther is no option to cancel it from the list. "but your cord might have shorts or something" -- Can that happen?Becoz I am getting it right by touching the modem alone and code kept idle.
