I'm trying to reinstall Windows XP and I keep getting this error message which stops the process altogether:

I've noticed recently that when using firefox or internet explorer the memory usage is constantly on the rise, even when I only have one window open and remain perfectly still on one web page. Within seconds the memory use by the program climbs from 15,000 to 40,000. Any ideas?
I turned on firefox to discover that my homepage had been changed to passthison.com. Looking up the site on google yielded no effective solutions, though I found out many other people have had the same problem. I scanned my registry for "passthison.com"; no luck. Any ideas?
