Ive tried Running an up-to-date Virus Scan but it didn't seem to find anything... what is a good free virus scanner. Anyone have any other ideas?

I have windows xp and I can't access my cd drives. when I try to run a program from the Cd Drive my computer freezes but they work in safe mode, I can't figure out why... If no one can help me, can some point me to a good tech forum. thanks....
