I recommend GAIM, I have been using it for a few months and I love it.

I use AVG, and have been using it for quite sometime. I have never encountered any problems at all with it. I recommend you at least give it a try, but in the end just go with the one that you enjoy the most.

I agree with the above posts, it is smart to keep it and run it just because you never know. If we all know MS though, this will be a program that you have to pay for after the beta stages, I really hope that is not the case.
