XP and *.tif documents

We are unable to open *.tif documents on our XP machines. We get an error about trying to run a dll as an app and it closes the windows fax viewer and shoots a message off to Microsoft. This has happened ever since we got the machines-one is a dell and the other a gateway. I can't seem to find any information about it, though. Can you help? Thank you!
