Default XP slow boot

I thought that I had seen this posted before but did not find it. A friends computer running XP Home is real slow booting up. It takes app. 5 minutes for it to boot up to where you can run any programs on it. It only has 128m ram. It is a HP with a 1.4 processor. I went through the startup in msconfig and unchecked everything that he did not need to start. It is still very slow on startup and runs slower than it should. Geting ready to add another 256m ram to it. Any other suggestions? It is not on the net and will not be so I took Norton out.

256 is enough..
try fresh install, and update all drivers.

This is a nifty little tool that I use to take a close look at what is going on during the boot process:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/...t/BootVis.mspx
You can use this and figure out where the bootup process hangs. After, this you can focus on the right "problem" area...
