Having a slight problem with my mini-Itx computer at the moment.. basically its running rather slow..

if i try play a video from youtube etc, it jumps and jolts about.. at 1st i thought maybe its my internet connection, but its working fine on my other computers.. I also noticed that the CPU usage sits at 100% while trying to play a clip on youtube..

at idle, with no extra programs in the taskbar running, the cpu usage hovers between 22%-50% and if i wiggle the mouse it jumps as high as 70% !!!

have just noticed while sitting here with the task manager up, not touching the keyboard or mouse, and only program running is Firefox, the CPU usage bar keeps fluctuating from 17% - 37% its all over the place!!

have also noticed that sometimes while typing text, everything will freeze while im typing, and a sec later, the computer will 'Catch up' with my input..

The computer is a Via Epia mini-itx embedded 800mhz cpu, 512mb ram.. connected to internet by ethernet wire at mo and i wouldnt imagin its overheating as there is 1 cpu fan, case fan, and the lid is off!!

any ideas!?

Post a hijackthis log.
Is there dust inside the case?
Have you defragmented before?
Deleted temp files?

My first guess would be to make sure that the graphics driver is correctly installed. It sounds like the CPU is handling all the graphics processing...

i would go through maintanence defrag...disk cleanup...error check on hdd...
then virus/spyware check

Open Task Manager and look to see what is eating up the CPU. If it is something you don't recognize, Google it. This should ALWAYS be your first step when something it spiking the CPU.

i am going to second this - go into task manager > processes > sort cpu and that as trotter said should tell u wat is eating cpu usage

ok, well i here is a screen dump of me task manager info..

cpuuse.jpg

i cannot see anything out of place in the processes..

note, defrag was currently running while i took them screen shots. Chkdsk has recently been run, and AVG runs automatically every night..

ok, but what is Diskeepers Automatic Defrag and IFAAST ?? and how do i remove them? are these bundled into windows XP? or partition manager?? as these are the only 2 programs that i can think of that it could have got installed with.. as i never installed them myself..

Use MSCONFIG, uncheck Quicktime, Real Player, iTunes, Diskkeeper, mixer.exe, msnmsgr.exe.
