Question Xp Problem Please Help !!

Anybody out there help me?

O/S- Windows XP
Recently tried removing some unused programs from my computer, curiosly I have also tried to load up some scanner and printer software and received the same box on screen.

Header:- "16 bit windows subsystem"

Message Reads:- C\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running msdos and microsoft windows applications.Choose 'close' to terminate the application.

Reasonably new to computing and I would really appreciate some help from anybody willing to lend me a hand.

Many Thanks
