My system is freezing or locking up. In most cases everything is locked and the computer is making a muted tic tic tic. In some cases the arrow will move,
but everything is locked up. ESC doesn't work. CTRL+ALT+DEL won't work. I've had to do a hard shutdown. When rebooting I've had lockups and the occasional Hard Disk not found and I/O errors. In some cases I've had to attemp to reboot 10 times before the operating system is loaded.

I have Windows XP Home Edition.
When I tried to reinstall the Flight Simulator it got most of the way through then froze.
When I scanned the disk looking for the error it froze.
When I defraged it froze.

I checked the Event viewer under system and the errors are as follows:

90% are Service Control Manager Event 7023
a bunch more are W32Time Events 29 and 17
some are atapi Event 9

1 system Error
1 disk Error
and 1 Windows Update agent Error.

A friend who pretends to know a bit more about most things claims the Hard drive is faulty and needs replacing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds to me that your HDD can't handle a load. And if it is making "Tic Tic Tic" noises, it is time to look for a new one... If you can get the HDD to work long enough when you to get the new one, you can use Norton Ghost or something to that effect and you then will have your PC back in working order on the New HDD....

Hello,

Your friend might be right. It sounds like your hard drive is having problems. But I can't make a definite conclusion.

Just to be safe, I would back up all your important data on your hard drive onto a separate medium.

Have you scanned your computer for viruses and spyware/adware?

Does Windows XP lock up in safe mode?

You could also try re-installing Windows XP on your current hard drive.

I have backed up the important stuff.
I ran AVG and Avast to look for virus' and spyware etc.
I reloaded XP.
I don't know if it freezes in safe mode.
Do I:
1. Start it in Safe Mode
2. Try to load flight simulator in safe mode and see if it locks up.
ie. try something I know locked it up.

or

1. Start in Safe Mode
2. Operate in safe mode for a certain period of time to see the results.

I would try all your "Do I" things... But with your HDD making all the noises... That's not good at all... If you are going to still use the current HDD I would back up often...
