Window's XP update probs

Hey guys im having a strange problums with windows XP pro. I install it on my 800mhz duron with 512 Ram and it works no problum but the minute i try to install the updates it refuses to boot. I have no clue what the problum is i even tried a different hard drive with the same results any help would be appreciated

os mite have scratches on cd or data may be corrupt

Ive tried to different hard drives and differnt install CDs that i know are good. Its anytime i try to install any of the critical updates

Do you get an error when you are trying to boot or what? When does the problem occur?

It goes thru post and recognizes the harddrive and CD rom and then the windows screen pops up and it reboots. If i try to use safe mode it just hangs up (there are no error messages it looks just like a normal boot)
