Windows XP Task Manger

Hello, Recently I have been noticing some applications, in particular internet explorer and acrobat reader, don't disappear from task manager. So let say if I have 5 windows of internet explorer open and then I close them. They are still in task manger under processes. I have to manually select them and end task it. Same thing happens with acrobat reader. Any idea why is this?
