Windows XP and smart cards

Is 3rd party software needed when using a smart card? I am about to order some smart card readers but i'm not sure if i need software as well to configure or manage them. ie: establishing a PIN and transfering data back and forth, setting rules, ect.

I have no experience with them so if anyone could give me some sort of How To guide on getting started I'd appreciate it.
