*Update*

I installed windows from my cd using my serial number. Then I patched the activation. I did all my windows update up until service pack 2.

*problem*

It won't let me download SP2. It just says "unable to download". Or something similar to that. Help would be great. Thanks.

They had a legit copy that they had already registered. They lost their XP cd's.

I brought my XP cd and installed off of that. If I tried to activate it, it would see it as a duplicate.

I'm at home now. How would Microsoft know that it wasn't a duplicate key if its already been registered?

no

use your key to install xp (you only do this if your xp cd doesn't recognize their key). now when you go to activate it, change it back to their original key (the option is in there). then you activate it
